A little bit of the history
On 11 January 1942, USAT Liberty was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine southwest of Lombok Strait. US destroyer Paul Jones and Dutch destroyer Van Genth took the damaged ship in tow, attempting to reach Celukan Bawang Harbor on the north cost of Bali. However, she was taking too much water, was beached on the eastern shore of Bali in Tulamben village so that the cargo and the fitting could be salvaged.
In 1963 the tremors associated with the eruption of month Agung caused the vessel of slip off the beach, and she now lies on a sandy slope in 6 meters to 30 meters of water.
The wreck of USAT Liberty is often misidentified as USAT Glo or identified by the misnomer, USS Liberty, The wreck is sometimes incorrectly referred to as a Liberty ship, through confusion of of the ship’s name with the class of World War II-built standard designed cargo ships.
